Musician/Writer/Speaker/Social commentator
Clare Bowditch is a well-loved songwriter, writer, social commentator, and stay-at-home mother of three who enjoys exchanging garden-cuttings with her elderly neighbours.
Occasionally, she gets to spend whole months touring with other acclaimed musicians like Leonard Cohen (who hand-picked her to support his 2010 tour of Australia which played to over 100,000) and win awards like Rolling Stone Woman of the Year (Contribution to Culture, 2010), Yen Woman of the Year (2008) and ARIA Best Female (2006 – she was the pregnant red-head singing a duet with Bernard Fanning and Kasey Chambers).
In 2010, Clare released her fourth album, the top ten Modern Day Addiction: a contagious, Berlin-recorded masterpiece exploring insecurity in the celebrity age.
Last year, Clare was nominated for three ARIA Awards, elected to the Music Victoria Board, was the first “Q and A” panellist ever to also perform a song, and was invited to spend an hour interviewing Prime Minister Gillard for MYSPACE, three days before the 2010 election.
"Clare is one of those effortlessly mesmeric communicators. Her rare blend of insight and charisma means that people cannot help but be thoroughly engaged when she speaks."Waleed Aly
On TV, she has been a featured guest on programs from "Compass", "Q&A", “Artscape” and “Insight”, to "Talkin’ Bout Your Generation", “Rockwiz” and "Spicks and Specks".
As a writer, Clare has contributed articles to The Drum, Wheeler Centre Daily, Rolling Stone and co-wrote her first piece for theatre with Jim MacPherson; “Tales From The Life Of Eva – The Eva Cassidy Story”, which she also stars in. The show has been a smash-hit and continues to tour.
Clare is also a keen public speaker, and has been an MC/host for Marieke Hardy and Michaela McGuire's "Women of Letters" book-launch in Melbourne. Clare also narrates Music Max's "My First Gig", Series One and Two, and in 2012 will begin hosting an in-flight channel for Qantas, The Spirit, focused on local music.
Clare regularly guest-hosts The Circle on Network 10, has presented ARIA Awards (and won them!), and last summer hosted the nightly Evenings radio show on ABC 774 (which went National for summer).
“She is that rare combination of creative talent, intellectual insight and evident empathy for the human condition. She is a compelling speaker on a range of topics relevant to most of us, and has both a gifted and humorous capacity to make large and small audiences feel immensely welcome and involved”- Fabian Dattner (Business Leader, Social Entrepreneur)
She has hosted summer shows on Triple J (her own creative-arts based show with Libby Chow, called Lazy Sunday Afternoons, and she also guest-hosted Sam Simmon’s summer show).
She has also guest-edited a special edition of Australian Musician magazine.
Clare was recently elected the Contemporary Music Representative for the Music Council of Australia, and is a proud ambassador for Life’s Little Treasures, PPCA and APRA.
