Last night Liz Ellis, along with seven other of Australia's most decorated sportspeople, including cricketer Shane Warne, motorcycle racer Mick Doohan and AFL coach Kevin Sheedy, was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
Hall of Fame chairman John Bertrand welcomed the eight sporting greats to the club at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where each was added to the honour roll at the National Sports Museum.
They were later recognised by their peers at the annual Hall of Fame dinner. Bertrand said the induction ceremony was "the ultimate in peer recognition".
POLE vaulter Steve Hooker became the first Australian athlete to win the Don Award in consecutive years last night, after his extraordinary victory at the world championships in Berlin in August.
The award is given by the Sport Australia Hall of Fame to the most inspirational athletic performance of the year.
Ellis joined Wallabies captain George Gregan as two of Australia's most respected team leaders. Ellis played for Australia for 15 years, claiming four world titles and two Commonwealth Games gold medals, while Gregan is the most-capped Wallaby in history and was part of the victorious 1999 World Cup team.
Congratulations Liz! It is a much deserved accolade to add to the list!
